hello ed001, hope this is the right place to ask, how do free apps make money? I mean what source of income do they have, I know many free apps come with ads. and that is probably one of their money source, however, I have come across free apps with no ads at all and I wonder how they make their money? I have a friend with good IT background, I really wish to work with him and come up with some apps. but I guess I need to learn more first?
thanks.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - without ads, I have absolutely no idea how they would make money on a free app. Usually it is one (or any combination of the 3) of 3 things that provide income. Ads, subscription for a period of time or up front payment. I am not aware of any other current income streams for an app.}

Not exactly Android, but have you heard anything about the new Blackberry 10 eds ?
Good or bad ? {Ed001's Note - it is still a bit behind the top phones, decent enough, but not top a top class phone and BB still don't have the number of apps Android and Apple have. Also Windows are catching up fast too.}

Samsung set to announce a 4" version of the S3 tomorrow, which they say is literally just a scaled down version. That aims it squarely at the iPhone market!

It looks like Google will be producing a full range soon. To add to their Nexus 7 tablet and Chromebooks, they are about to release the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 phone and 'phablet', with a Nexus 10 tablet to follow soon.

looks like the new HTC One will be released as the Google Nexus 5 instead, Sharp have already begun to manufacture the 5 inch screens for it. Full HD 5 inch screens at that! Should be released this month as well.
I might have to get one of those!

could Guilty Dragon be the first really good RPG for a phone/tablet?

hey ed001, just got my s3 today, am a very happy man, worth the wait. i just have a few questions not really about android, but about lithium-ion batteries technology.
heres a link of what i read just now,
batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries/
and (im hoping u know abit on lithium batteries or any other poster perhaps?) my question is
1. for the first charge is it true that we are no longer required to charge for 8 hours n stuff? is it true for lithium ion batteries? i know nickel cadnium batteries was when we had to do this.
2. is it true that lithium ion battery gets better with use? ur personal experience perhaps? it says there, it will improve for every charge and it will be very good by the 6th or 7th charge.
3. the study says that it is okay to charge whenever (meaning even at 50% charge it up for 15 minutes) and it would not have any effect on the battery, the only two things that effect negatively on the battery is overcharging the battery, or discharging (let it go empty) the battery. in fact the study says that a 1 hour charge (not reaching 100%) is better than a full 3 hour charge. confusing, but i have to say i had 0 knowledge on lithium ion batteries before reading..
thanks ed
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - no one is fully certain yet mate, but the latest research does indicate that it works best when kept partially charged, yes. But, it is not fully researched yet, the only way to be fully certain would be to get two and try it out for yourself. Personally I have found my battery is lasting much longer now than it used to do, I never discharge it fully and often top up the charge so I can listen to music while I am out. Mine also stops charging the second it is full, so never overcharges. So my personal experience agrees with the research.} How about ur first charge ed? did u charge for the normal 8 (or any number) hours? because i did not, i followed the research. well then i guess ill be the guinea pig here, n ill update u on ed.
i left it till it was 1% then charged it till 100% n straight away turned off the charge. we'll see how it goes.
but does ur battery get better with use ed?
Kaizer Sry ed, u already answered it my bad. thanks.
also ed, do u know any good app for football score updates? only for score updates, like the livescore app. wondering if there is any better than livescore.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - for the Prem? If you mean the English Prem, there are a few, but I can't say that I have tried any of them as of yet.} Hey kaizer had the s3 for 3 weeks now but not really played with it as such due to waiting for iphone contract to finish should be this week.
as for the battery heard that after 6-7 charges its meant to be better ive drained it twice & charged it for 8 hours the 1st time,with lith batteries on cordless drills (only example i know lol) its best to totally drain them always & fully charge them i know a phone & a cordless drill are totally different things lol
ps good app is swift key btw ! as for live scores i just use SSN

how do ed? got the s3 & jumped from apple to android,think you get better apps on that than you do with apple ?
what i am needing help on is,podcast & music etc? i love my podcasts but downloaded 2 apps on how to do it & its not worked any ideas on good ones anyone
lenny {Ed001's Note - the only podcasts I have used were just ordinary mp3s, in which case they should play in the standard music player. Or do you mean how to download them to your phone? Because I will have to see what I can find as I don't listen to them at all, never got into them. Music, again, will work in the standard music player. Unless you are having an issue due to iTunes licensing, Apple make things a pain to use on other platforms purposely.} Ed001/lenny their is a android app called listen that if you just go to android martket and type in google listen once its installed you can just search for what you want or their most popular podcasts its pretty good you can listen to it or download it for later use it was the first app i downloaded when i got my new phone last week there is a few others but listen seems to be the best
riley Cheers riley DL listen seems a good app like my trance/house music so got w&w & avicii podcasts etc but how do i get them into the music player ? ive DL them played them for a few min but they wont go into the music player ? well 1 did but dont no how i done it lol
does anyone use the samsung apps ? tried to download a notepad but its not on the screen ?
really clueless with the android system but does blow apple out the water
off topic when i got the s3 i asked the guy in the phone shop why apple dont do a 2 year warranty like htc samsung etc,he told me apple is worth more than the USA treasury & apple is worth more than 9billion
ed,that f1 timing app the one ive DL wants £20 for it to work ! i take it i DL the wrong one ?
cheers again for all the advice gents
lenny {Ed001's Note - the one I have is called F1 2012 Timing App, it is not as good as last year's, but still quite useful to keep up with the times.}

to Ed001 and fellow posters i have just got the new samsung galaxy and i wanted to know if any 1 has downloaded the fm manager game for it its £6.50 just wanted to ask if its any good before i pay that much for it or does any 1 know any other good football manager games on android or any good apps really
cheers riley {Ed001's Note - I haven't downloaded the FM game, never liked management apps on handheld devices, they are always too simplified for my liking. I like the depth of the PC game, that gets lost on a handheld device. If you get an app such as romgripper or variants, you can download emulators that allow you to play all the old PS1, SNES etc games on your phone. They are always good for killing time. I quite like the Drag Racing game, that has quite a bit of depth, plenty of cars to buy and upgrade. Other than that, I am not much of one for playing apps on my phone any more, just don't have the time. Plus I have a PS Vita, which is much nicer to play games on.} Ed001 i had the drag game on my experia which was stolen last week whilst i was doing a good turn lol ill down load the others you suggested now i was just thinking it might be something to kill time while im out but wanted to know if some 1 had it 6.50 is a lot for an app that may be terrible lol it looks like the fm manager games like 2007 where you had dots instead of players if i give it a go ill do a review so at least every 1 has an idea before they buy i was going to ask on the video games site but thought this might have been better thanks
riley {Ed001's Note - Drag Racing has a bike version too, not played that much though as I am not a bike fan myself. The emulators are great, you just need to find one for the right system you want to play and then find a rom gripper (or variant by another name) that has that game on its files. I had a Nintendo emulator, my daughter used to play all the Pokemon games and the like on it, but that was when I used a Galaxy Tab 7 as my phone. I haven't really bothered with games much, the screen seems too small on a normal phone!} Ed001 iv been looking for a rom gripper a lot have been taken of the market i was looking into it last night and i come acroos something called rooting your phone similar to the jail breaking on the i phones have you done this with your's or do you know much about it cheers
riley {Ed001's Note - I haven't done it, but I know someone who has, he uses it to put a custom operating system on and it works fine, if you know what you are doing. With Android, it is an open source software anyway, so there is a lot of help out there to customise them, unlike Apple products. Because of that help, it should be fairly easy to do, I know my friend taught himself just from what he could find out on the net.} Ed001 cheers iv been looking in to it all day just to make sure its ok lol they is a app on the market that helps you do it i think ill leave it for today until i can look in to it a bit more but i found a rom gripper so i dont realy need to do it now androids are not really like i phones basic unless jail broken a load of my mates got them they have all got rid all ready and swapped to the galaxy's
riley {Ed001's Note - I much prefer Android phones over iPhones, they are style over substance Apple products. I get annoyed when Apple cultists start spouting off how much better their £1000+ plus Mac is over a PC, when the PC they are comparing it to cost £350ish. When it is compared to a £1000+ PC, it is just not in the same league. They are only good if you are a music producer or graphic designer or similar businesses. Other than that, a PC is much better.} Ed01 i got the fm manager for android iv just started playing it the best i can describe it is like championship manager between 2001 and 2005 lol when i have done a bit more i will do a review will need to ask you about how to do it and wether i have to upload the photo's myself but its ok good for passing some time on if you dont have the psp like yourself and to be honest i dont see what the fuss is over the i phone if you go on any classifieds irs 90% people selling them iv never had 1 myself bur just by the amounts been sold they cant be all that
riley {Ed001's Note - the iPhone is just an old Samsung with an Apple o/s, wrapped in an Apple case and then trebled in price. I will look forward to your review, might get it for my Vita if it is good. Might be good to keep me occupied when travelling.}

s3 is out! well not where i live though ed, whats ur opinion on the s3? id like to hear ur opinion.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - best phone in the world, right now, in my opinion.} Evening 001.
being a apple fan for 3 & a half years im going to go for the s3.never had a andriod before but do you/know anyelse no of any good apps to get
lenny {Ed001's Note - I like the Drag Racing app, free and fun, lots of cars to buy and online races etc. Android Booster is good, so long as you remember to activate it sometimes (unlike 003!) for extending battery life. As you like F1, there is a very good free app, F1 Timing 2012, that lets you keep up with all the times. Whatsapp is a very good messenger that works across all the platforms (Android, Apple, Windows and BB), it has improved massively recently as well. Though Touch is a decent rival to it. All those are free apps.} Cheers for the in put ed & nice tip about the f1 app mate
once again cheers bud.
lenny {Ed001's Note - you are very welcome, I am not much of one for apps, I have so much music on my memory card, there is no room left, so I only keep a few favoured ones. Those mentioned and I also have Skype, and that is about it!}
08 Apr 2012 08:30:04
hah, its already april ed, hope its getting closer. after some amount of thinking, i think if its slightly bigger but still fits my pocket, then i wont have any problems with it. come on samsung! what are u waiting for! come out already with ur s3!
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - there was a leaked invite circulated putting the release date as May 22nd. Could be a fake though.} I heard about that 1 too ed, from a site i read before this (cant remember which 1) it says 2 different sources with different pictures leaked came with the same date may 22nd as well ed.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - it has been widely reported but no official confirmation, they have confirmed there is no 3D display though.} Whats 3D display ed?
u know i find it funny, that almost always iphone predictions would come up with hologram keyboards. i think we're maybe 10-15 years behind hologram dont u think ed? or is there something i dont know?
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - they aren't quite holograms, holograms would stand out above the screen. 3D display is just like a mini 3D TV screen, similar to the 3DS, that gives 3D images a little bit of depth.} The comment on hologram was not related to the 3D display question ed btw. just a side comment coz i always see it on the net, iphones with holograms n stuff, lol but i dont think we're close to being able to use that on our phones yet.
so ed is the 3rd May date the official 1 ed?
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - no, that's the date it goes on show. Still no official release date confirmed yet.}
13 Mar 2012 10:05:16
www.techstuffs4u.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-to-release-in-april-2012/
this is just what they expect right? assumptions and all that? i havent heard anything official yet, and this article is talking about the s3 with 4.8" display. thats wayy bigger than nexus. hope its not the truth.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - no, this is pretty much confirmed news, though not officially confirmed. They are just holding off officially confirming in case of problems. The S3 is meant to be the same size as the Nexus, it just uses the full width of the face, rather than missing off a little at each side.} Aww now thats sad. why are they making it so big? i mean for a handphone. i would understand if its a pda or something like that.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - because bigger screens are easier to use, they can be a lot more responsive. It also aids cooling and means they can pack more into it. I just remembered, you are the one with small hands aren't you? It might be a bit too big for you, it is certainly a bit on the bulky side for a pocket.} It should be fine on my hands i guess, but as u mentioned, the bulky part is where i dont like it.. i mean we've been using handphones for years, last time it was about making it smaller and smaller, and now suddenly its the other way around. i get that bigger screens are actually better (considering its touch screen and stuff) but not all of them has to be big right? are there other models that are out there or upcoming soon (different brands are acceptable i guess, if u deem them good enough i guess?)? S2's size is acceptable to me, i dont really mind about it being thicker, just not bigger. but even if there is, i dont think any will be as good as s3.. right? or am i wrong?
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - the S3 will be the pinnacle, there will be other, lesser models that come out to appeal to those who prefer a smaller handset. The problem you have is that phones are being driven by the people who want to use it to watch films and other media uses. A bigger screen is better for websites as well. In fact, all the things you need extra processing power for, are much more usable on a bigger screen.}
17 Feb 2012 08:21:55
ed001, i checkout Nexus, and its too big for me sadly. so its now either S2 or 4S, but,
1. do u have news of anything new coming in from Samsung? or Iphone maybe? as in when a new phones coming out? but S2 is the biggest in terms of size i can take. Nexus is a little too big im afraid.
2. Is it true that S2 gets hot quite fast with use? eg games and apps. thats a comment i got from the person selling phones (when i was doing my price surveying)
because of the size i have delayed getting a new phone lol. but id rather wait than buy something that i dont really want.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - I have never known the S2 to get hot, but I use Android Booster to shut down all the unnecessary stuff on my phones. As for new ones coming out, the S3 release date is expected to be announced soon. I wouldn't suggest an iPhone, nice o/s but the phones themselves are just lower end Samsung parts packaged in an Apple case.} I hope the s3 wont be as big as nexus. wouldnt mind it to be slightly smaller than s2 too. release date is coming out, do u think the release date would be somewhere near or far away? first the problem was money, now when i have the money, other things come up. theres always a problem :(. to be honest i dont really want an iphone but if i cant get a samsung that i like, i have to take iphone. so im hoping s3 would fit my criteria of a phone.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - the S3 will be an upgraded S2 and will be that size. The release date is usually only announced a few weeks before release these days, I would expect an April release, maybe May at the latest.} Oh thank god, i really hope it is between May and April so I wont have to wait too long.
BTW, just to inform u, i contacted my brother (hes a doc in another state so i rarely see him) and asked him about his phone, about the heat problem (Samsung SII) and he said it does heat up, probably because of the thin nature of the phone, heat gets to ur hands faster. He says playing games and sometimes going online / browsing will get it hot, and sometimes too hot to handle (which means extremely hot). but other than that it is a fine phone. i searched online too, and people are complaining about that as well, i hope this is no longer a problem for SIII. just sharing with u and everyone, luckily my mum told me my brother is using the SII so i had the chance to ask.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - cheers for letting me know, I have never experienced it, but I have only tested the S2, not owned it. That is the kind of thing that only comes to light after a while of using it and it getting cluttered with extra apps etc.} Ive been reading more on this topic, here goes.
1. they say that rooting the device can sort of help battery life, what is rooting? is it something like jail-breaking? they also say it helps reduce the heat problems.
2. im seeing more complains on the phone heating up thing, some people are saying u need to update the phones firmware. i know what software and hardware is, but what is firmware?
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - rooting is very similar to jail-breaking, basically the same thing, it is just attaining administrator privileges on an Android device. Firmware is the inbetween bit, I guess, it is the programs loaded in to run the hardware. I am never sure which is firmware and which is software myself, the delineation is very vague.} Alright thanks ed :). guess we'll talk more about this soon, cant wait for S3 to come out, just hope i wont be disappointed though.
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - fingers crossed!} Sry to bother u again ed, but do u mind updating whenever u hear any news for S3? are u gonna post here? (im asking because i remember our conversation about google nexus but i dont think its this site). if its another site, do tell me. im gonna visit that site once a week just to check up. thankss
Kaizer {Ed001's Note - I will update here for you as soon as I hear anything.}
09 Feb 2012 11:53:12
Any apps that yous recommend thanks r.mac {Ed001's Note - what kind of apps? Games? Tools? For any android product that can run it, I fully recommend Android Booster, it scans any downloads and also lengthens battery life, essential for me. For a free game, Drag Racing is decent, nice and simple to play but plenty of life in it.}
05 Feb 2012 21:23:57
Ed001 what was the name of the htc you mentioned a bit ago i think it was on video games talk im wanting a new phone so i thought id check it out was it the vortex
giblet {Ed001's Note - was it the Sensation XE or XL? They are good phones, equal to the S2 and better than the latest iPhone, but not as good as the Galaxy Nexus. But they do have the advantage of having Beats Audio, which is fantastic sound quality.} Ed001 i think it must have been the nexus are the htc verizons any good iv just been looking at the nexus it does look like a nice phone iv got the experia x10 pro at the moment its terrible the ribbon has gone twice you cant get adobe flash player for it so im looking to up grade what would you say was better the sensation the incredible titan hd7 evo 3d or even the lg optimus i dont want to be a pain asking all these questions but i dont want to end up with another phone like the experia {Ed001's Note - the best phone currently on the market is the Nexus, it is a class above the rest. Unless your priority is the camera, in which case the Optimus is the best, it has the best lens, so it doesn't rely on software to bump up the quality of the pics. If it is sound quality that is important to you, then it is the HTC and Beats Audio that wins. But overall phone is without doubt the Nexus.} Ed001 i mainly use my phone for just browsing watching videos and music really oh and coming on here lol taht ws the main reason i was so dissapointed with the experia due not been able to get adobe for it i never thought to check till after and i went on a forum and they were all going on about it cheers for the advice tho
giblet {Ed001's Note - in that case, unless the music is the most important thing, I would say the Galaxy Nexus or wait for the S3.}
02 Feb 2012 07:41:10
galaxy S2 or Galaxy note?
which one is bettre guys?
help me i am in a big dilemma.
and tell me when is S3 releasing {Ed001's Note - the Note is more powerful and has a bigger screen, so easier to type on, but the bigger screen is also the main problem with it. It makes it too bulky. The S2 is much easier to hold, use and carry around with you because of that. I would suggest the Galaxy Nexus myself, I personally think it is the best phone on the current market.} What about Galaxy S3? {Ed001's Note - likely to be launched in April, but no definite release date has been confirmed yet.}
17 Jan 2012 11:20:16
interseted in gettin a new phone either iphone or samsung wot yous thinks better? {Ed001's Note - Samsung is far better, the iPhone is mostly made by Samsung anyway, just the outer case that is Apple. But the Galaxy Nexus is a far better phone, the best currently on the market. The thing that sets Apple products apart is the operating system, it is extremely easy to use and likeable. People get them because they are fashionable but then fall in love with that. As a product, though, it is inferior to the Galaxy Nexus and S2, even the HTC Sensation XE/XL is a better phone.}

Had a HTC Flyer in may, great piece of kit but please be aware the customer service from HTC is disgusting. They had my flyer for nearly 2 months trying to fix a screen fault, I hounded them daily by phone, e mail and twitter in an attempt to get it back. They failed every time to get back to me and in the end sent a replacement and a Parrot car kit as an apology. They make great gadgets but the customer service lets them down just be aware when buying In my opinion load of crap mate!
